"House

The studio asked for a Jaws knockoff, so director Nobuhiko Obayashi consulted his pre-teen daughter for story ideas, believing that adults “only think about things they understand … everything stays on that boring human level” whereas “children can come up with things that can’t be explained.” The result is a surreal ghost story about seven allegorically named teenage schoolgirls (Gorgeous, Melody, Prof, Mac, Fantasy, Kung-Fu, and Sweet) fighting for survival in a house that wants to eat them.

It’s a dreamlike film, with expressionistic special effects that don’t aim for verisimilitude but rather emphasize the uncanny through nightmarish imagery that against all logic manages to be both scary and hilarious. Which, if you think about it, is childhood in a nutshell.
