Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)

Two-Lane Blacktop theatrical release poster

Perfect viewing as summer burns itself out, Two-Lane Blacktop is sticky with August heat and sun-bleached asphalt, with nameless drivers lost on endless highways. A series of high-adrenaline drag races are almost beside the point. What lingers is the feeling of drifting through an American landscape that’s wasted, empty, and impossible to connect with. Directed by Monte Hellman who made a name for himself with low-budget westerns, and released in 1971, Two-Lane Blacktop presents the highway as a place of isolation, repetition, and emotional distance. Pop-star James Taylor gives an astonishingly restrained, against-type performance as a wild-eyed loner with almost nothing to say. Sunburned, melancholy, and haunted by the sense that the road never really leads anywhere, we just keep driving.
